India’s rice export ban to help global competitors
NEW DELHI (Commodity Online): India’s ban on non basmati rice export has helped global competitors such as Thailand, Vietnam, Pakistan, Burma and Brazil to be top in supplies, said the US Department of Agriculture (USDA).
According to USDA report, Thailand, Vietnam, Pakistan, Burma and Brazil collectively exported around 1.7 million tonnes of rice in 2008 to African countries, were India’s historical markets.
The Indian government’s decision to ban non-basmati exports has knocked off India to fourth position, whereas Pakistan has moved up by one place to third rank in the list of top rice exporters in 2008-09.
Last year in April, the government put ban on non-basmati rice exports to manage over rising inflation. However, the government allowed to ship abroad about two million tonnes only via diplomatic channels.
Further, the report also added that the policy changes announced by the Indian government with respect to non-basmati rice had resulted in a rise in global prices last year. However, the panic has largely abated, prices have fallen and both stocks and consumption in the rest of the world are rising.
