India's spices exports register 12% growth
Commodity Online KOCHI: India’s spices exports registered 12 percent growth during April-August 08, compared to last year, out of which chilly exports contributed 22 percent, followed by cumin, pepper and turmeric at 9,8 and 5 percent respectively, said Spices Board.
According to Indian Spices Board statement, during August 2008, a total quantity of 35,555 tonnes of spices valued Rs.417.28 crores (97.19 million US $) has been exported from India as against 37,395 tonnes valued Rs.423.59 crores (103.78 million US $) in August 2007.
The major items exported during August 2008 are Chilli, Cumin, Mint products, Spice Oils & Oleoresins, Pepper and Turmeric, it said.
The statement further noted that the cumulative spices export during the period of April-August 2008 is estimated as 223,050 tonnes valued Rs.2265.25 crores (537.30 million US $) as against 198,985 tonnes valued Rs.1950.09 crores (476.45 million US $) in the corresponding period of last year.
Compared to last year, the export has shown an increase of 12 percent in terms of quantity and an increase of 16 percent in rupee value (In dollar terms, the increase is 13 percent). Spice oils and oleoresins including mint products contributed 39 percent of the total export earnings. Chilli contributed 22 percent followed by cumin 9 percent, pepper 8 percent and turmeric 5 percent, said the statement.
During April-August 2008, most of the major spices have shown an increasing trend in exports both in terms of quantity and value as compared to the same period of last year. However, export of spices like Pepper, Ginger, Nutmeg and Mace and Mint products have declined both in terms of quality and value as compared to last year, it said.
