MUMBAI (Commodity Online): India's sugar output up 19% to 45.84 lakh tons till December 15th 2011 campared to 38.63 lakh tons in the same period last year, according to Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA).
The sugar season is during the October to September period.
“Even though the mills started their crushing slightly late this year, especially in Maharashtra, the production this year has registered an overall jump of 18.7 per cent,” the Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA), reported PTI.
The sugar production in Maharastra, country's largest sugar producer, has manufactured around 17.50 lakh tons as of Dec 15th compared to 6.25 lakh tonnes in the same period last year. Whereas, production in Uttar Pradesh, rose 50% to 12.85 lakh tons from 8.55 lakh tons last year.
The industry body, ISMA, has estimated the country's production to be around 26 million tons in the 2011-12 season.
India is the world’s second-largest sugar producer and biggest consumer.
