Indonesia includes oil palm in forest crops list
JAKARTA (Commodity Online) : Indonesia on Wednesday included oil palm plantations as part of forest crops.
According to Indonesia’s Forest Production Development Directorate, the decision on the implementation of oil palm plantations in forested areas is expected to reduce damage.
The Directorate said investment in the oil palm sector would not sacrifice forested areas.
Malaysia had already included oil palm plantation management system as part of activities in the forestry sector. And even the FAO defined the management of oil palm plantations as part of activities in forested regions.
If the oil palm plantations are included as part of forested land, the result would be a mosaic industrial forest which not only have perennial crops, but oil palm as well, it said.
