NEW DELHI (Commodity Online): Ongoing issue over India’s premium basmati rice has turned to new twist that Iran’s Health and Medical Education Ministry has clarified that it doesn’t contain any heavy metals, reported Hindu Business Line on Wednesday.

On the wide circulation in the Iranian press about the contamination in India’s premium quality rice Pusa 1121, Indian Council of Agricultural Research has conducted a detailed study and found no harmful content to human in the rice.

According to Dow Jones Newswires report, the ICAR, which developed grain, has analyzed the rice on the ground of allegations of Iran’s Press TV that India’s Pusa 1121 rice contained cadmium and lead along with the arsenic content far higher than permitted levels.

However, India’s Agriculture & Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) said, it has not received any official communication from Iran over the rice quality issue.

According to A K Gupta, an advisor to India’s Agriculture & Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), the country has nothing official from Iranian authority in this regard except the media reports that widely circulated.

Indian exporters said that there was not any obstacle in the shipment and the exports are going well as per consignment to Iran.

India's APEDA has sent a proposal through Indian Embassy in Iran inviting a delegation from the country to showcase the processes involved in production of the premium grain, Gupta said.
