KANNUR : In an attempt to help pepper growers in kerala, hit by price-fall of black pepper, Kerala Agricultural University, situated at Panniyur near here is all set to support white gold pepper.
The pepper research station of the KAU and the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) of the University has tested its marketability under the brand name 'Panniyur white gold' and consumer acceptance as part of an on farm trial.
While black pepper costs Rs 100 per kg, white pepper can fetch Rs 300 per kg and Rs 400 in powder form.
White pepper is produced by removing the outer skin of ripe green pepper soon after harvesting. This was done by immersing green pepper in water for a minimum ten days and removing the skin using a specially designed machine.
Dirt, pesticide and fungicide residues hidden in the wrinkle of black pepper are absent in white pepper while its aroma and flavour retained. It has great demand in foreign countries, KAU said.
