Monsoon delay likely to hit rain fed crops
Commodity Online NEW DELHI : Solvent Extractors' Association of India on Wednesday said, delay in the southwest monsoon is likely to impact crop size in rain-fed oilseeds areas in the country.
In a statement issued here, it said sowing of oilseeds and other kharif crops has been delayed in the absence of rains.
Farmers may shift to short-cycle crops such as cotton and castor seeds. Sowing of crops like pulses, oilseeds, and maize is already delayed by more than 15 days.
However, it said the delay in monsoon is not affecting vegetable oil prices as most of the demand is met via imports.
Monsoon was supposed to reach Maharashtra by Jun 10, Gujarat and Central India by Jun 15, but it has failed to advance after hitting the Kerala coast on May 23.
If monsoon departs as per its schedule by Sept 15-30, kharif crop yields will be impacted. For a good oilseed crop, rains should arrive by Jun 25 in central India and latest by Jun 30 in north India.
