Month-old ban on onion export lifted
Commodity Online NEW DELHI: As onion prices began to ease in domestic market on increased arrival of stock, government has lifted restriction imposed on the commodity’s overseas sales.
Export of onion can now be undertaken after obtaining no-objection certificate from NAFED and 12 other state trading agencies (STEs), notified the Director General of Foreign Trade.
The Director General on Oct. 15 put restrictions on import of onion asking exporters to get a licence from it before undertaking export of onions.
That restriction came in when onion prices began to skyrocket in different past of the country. This restriction was in addition to the no-objection certificate through which onions are exported.
The domestic price of this politically sensitive commodity in October went up to Rs 30 a kilo, which has come down now to Rs 16-18 a kilo in the retail market.
Check on the export and availability of fresh stock from producing regions are said to be reasons for easing onion price.
