Nigeria,Uganda get grants to boost cassava output
ABUJA (Commodity Online) : World's largest cassava producer Nigeria and Uganda received much awaited grants in order to boost productions further more.
The Netherlands has approved six million euro as grant, to boost Nigeria's cassava production while the World Bank approved a $30 million credit to strengthen agricultural productivity and growth in Uganda, with a special focus in researching and improving the cassava crop.

The Netherlands aid will be delivered under the project named “Project 2015 Cassava Objectives'' .
Dutch Agricultural Development and Trading Company (DATCO), the Netherlands-based agricultural company will monitor all related programmes in Nigeria’s Taraba, Benue and Osun states.
The project is aimed at strengthening the capacities of 162,000 farm families, supporting smallholder cassava farmers through adequate provision of modern technology and making it sustainable.
The expected outcomes from the project is to increase yearly net income by at least $250 per hectare of cassava and increased access to, and use of improved agro inputs from 10 to 80 per cent, among others, and would create a stable demand for cassava and be self supporting in energy requirements.
Nigeria produces nearly 38 million tonnes of cassava annually.
Uganda will receive World Bank aid under the Eastern Africa Agricultural Productivity Program (EAAPP).
Under the EAAPP, a Regional Centre of Excellence for cassava will be established at Uganda’s Namulonge Research Institute, with similar efforts in the other countries focusing on rice, wheat, and dairy as priority commodities identified by the Association for Strengthening Agricultural Research in Eastern and Central Africa (ASARECA).
Uganda will develop and lead joint programs geared toward improving the productivity and profitability of cassava production and processing.
This project will complement agricultural investment programs that are being implemented in Uganda and supported by IDA and other Development Partners to achieve greater food security through increased agricultural productivity and farm incomes.
