NSEL to expand operations in Gujarat

AHMEDABAD : In order to expand its operations and to reach out to villagers, National Spot Exchange of India Limited (NSEL) has planned to set up 35 to 40 storage centres in Gujarat, aimed to cover 75-80 per cent of the crop in the state.
According to an NSEL top brass, the exchange developed an innovative strategy to manage its operations among villagers and hired nearly 100 people to conduct field works.

Field workers will visit villages every morning to communicate the activities of the exchange. Promotion clippings of the bourse would be shown amidst entertainment programme such as films, he said.
In the mornings, the same people go to the villages with a loud speaker and announce the prices, benefits, other activities of the exchange, urging the farmers to join them.
In addition to this, they also send free SMS texts to 950 farmers in Gujarat every day, telling them about the prices in the exchanges.
Matrisana, Dharampur, Kalyanpur and Dalod in the Kadi region and Kumbasan, Merwada, Bhagad and Parkhari in the Palanpur region are some of the villages where the marketing drive is being conducted. The main crops grown in these regions are castor, mustard and jeera.
The spot platform of MCX, NSEL is doing a business of around Rs 15-20 crore a day and trades in non-perishables such as groundnut, cumin, isabgol and castor.
It has presence in around 150 locations across Gujarat, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh.
