RAJKOT/MUMBAI: Weather vagaries have hit the king of fruits in different ways in various parts of the country this year.

While Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra are blessed with favourable weather conditions for the mango crop this season, Gujarat witnessed rains during the flowering time of mango trees, which affected the crop this time around.

And, the arrival of these luscious fruits may get delayed this time in Gujarat due to the untimely rains and the cold wave. The mangoes are likely to hit the markets in the first week of May.

According to Guarav Patel in Rajkot, the mango season has already begun, but there are no ripening signs of fruits in Kesar orchid. This means the arrival of mangoes in Gujarat mandis will be delayed.

In another development, good weather conditions in Uttar Pradesh (UP), Maharashtra and Orissa have resulted in a bumper crop in these states.

According to officials, India last year produced approximately 1.3 crore tonne of mangoes and this year the country is bound to produce 15 lakh tonne more.

Production in UP will be up by 25 to 30% from last year’s 28 lakh tonne, while production in both Maharashtra and Orissa will also be more compared to last year.

Uttar Pradesh horticulture department officials also agree that the mango crop in UP is good this time.

Arrival of mangoes from UP, which is the second largest producer, will start from first week of June.

UP mainly produces dussehri variety followed by langda and chausa.

Due to rains, mango production may fall in Andhra Pradesh, largest producer in India, and also Karnataka.

In Maharashtra, production of mangoes will be at an average level at 7.1 lakh tonne as against 6.5 lakh tonne last year.

Alphonso is grown mainly in Maharashtra’s Konkan belt and arrivals have already started, but will pick up only by April 15.

Hope for a good production in Andhra Pardesh that produces mainly Banganapalli variety has been affected due to rains which are still continuing.

India is the largest mango producer in the world contributing over 55% of total world production.

The country also produces largest varieties of mangoes in different states.
