KOCHI (Commodity Online): The Spices Board , WTO cell of Department of Agriculture, Govt of Kerala and World Spice Organisation will jointly organized a one day workshop on sustainability of spices on 20 th January. Spices farmers from various parts of Kerala, spices exporters, traders, scientists from Kerala Agriculture University, Indian Institute of Spices Research, Spices Board and Directorate of Coco Arecanut and Spices will take part.

The theme of the workshop assumes relevance following the 23% fall in exports in quantity terms in spices from April to August 2011 and hence the availability of good quality produce, free from harmful pesticide residues is most important.

The joint initiative will be focusing on promotion of cultivation and quality assurance to increase export, discuss major challenges in spices trade, developmental programmespepper, field problems, research interventions and practical knowledge of farmers.

The workshop expects to pave way for bringing in prosperity and growth to small and marginal spice growers thereby promoting export as well. Experts from Indian Institute of Spice Research (IISR) and Kerala Agricultural University also join hands with the organizers to offer guidelines and initiate discussions for the workshop.
