Sri Lankan delegation visits Coir Board
Commodity Online KOCHI: Sri Lanka’s delegation made a visit to India’s Coir Board to study methods and new developments in the sector.
The team, headed by Dr Padma Ratnayake, executive director, South Asia Partnership, held discussions with senior officials.
She was accompanied a 12-member team consisting of Premathilake Jayakody, secretary for deputy high commissioner, Sri Lanka and Prasad Daluwatta, provincial manager, Export Development Board. They have also visited the Central Coir Research Institute, Kalavoor, and coir producing centres at Alappuzha.
The delegation attended a meeting where various matters connected with the development of the coir industry in Sri Lanka were discussed.
Dr Ratnayake said that SAPSRI (South Asia Partnership Sri Lanka) works with marginalised communities across the country, covering 12 districts.
The focus of its work revolves around community empowerment, participation of women in governance, small and medium entrepreneurship development, resettlement of internally displaced persons, women and child protection advocacy/action, and strengthening the capacity of local government institutions and community-based organisations.
A presentation depicting various facets of the coir industry was made before the delegation. P Ajidkumar, joint director, Coir Board, explained the activities undertaken by the board for the development of the coir industry in India.
The delegation was shown the way the coir industry converts waste into wealth and the presentation highlighted the tremendous potential for setting up a coir-based industry.
