BANGKOK (Commodity Online): The top two rice producers of the world, Thailand and Vietnam are expecting record rice sales in 2011.
According to the Thai Rice Exporter association, Thailand, the biggest rice exporter, has fixed a target of exporting more than 10million tons in 2011. Last year it was around 9 million tons.
"We have done quite well in the first half of the year and, if there are no problems in the second half, we're quite confident we could sell more than 10 million tons this year," Korbsook Iamsuri, president of the association was quoted by Reuters as saying.
The rice export of Thailand had reached 10 million tons in 2004; it was the time when world demand was strong.
Annual exports have dropped to in between 8.0 million and 9.5 million tons which is about a third of world trade.
Vietnam, the second-biggest exporter, aiming to ship 7.3 million tons, is also hoping for record exports this year.
