CHENNAI (Commodity Online) : The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) has suggested the farmers to grow ground nut this season, on account of the growing demand in oil seeds.

According to the data provided , about 4.12 lakh hectares was under the ground nut crop in 2009-10 and had yield around 8.89 lakh tons.

“The total oilseed production in India during 2010-11 was estimated at 39 million tons with groundnut at eight million tons, soybean at 9.8 million tons, rape/mustard seed at seven million tons, cotton seed and copra at 10.8 million tons and others at 3.4 million tons.,” pointed out by Researcher from Farm university, Tamil Nadu was quoted by business Line as saying.

The edible oil production in India during 2011-12 is estimated to 7.4 million tons slightly high compared previous year 6.5 million tons and had to import around 9 million tons to meet the domestic requirement.

The price of Ground may touch Rs. 40-45 per kg this year, say the researchers.

If the farmers can put more area under groundnut production , then it will reduce the pressure to import edible oil.
Major groundnut producers in the State are Thiruvannamalai, Villupuram, Vellore, Namakkal, Salem and Erode.
