NEW YORK (Commodity Online): By 2030, the world will need 50% more food, 45%more energy and 30% more water than present, so there is no escaping the urgent need to boost agricultural productivity, according to a United Nations (UN) report.
UN has urged the government and international organisations to start create a 21st Century ‘ever-green revolution’ for agriculture that would aim to double production as well as protecting the resources, according to a report ‘Resilient People, Resilient Planet: A Future Worth Choosing’.
According to the report, new agricultural revolution should be achieved partly through improving investments in the agricultural research and development and it should also focus on sustainable intensification and on crop diversification and resilience to climate change, reported Farmers Guardian.
The usages of new green biotechnology is expected to enable farmers to adapt to climate change, improve resistance to pests, restore soil fertility and contribute to the diversification of the rural economy.
According to the report, with more than three-quarters of the world’s poor are living in rural areas and 2.5 billion rural inhabitants are involved in agriculture, immediate push on sustainable agriculture would yield enormous social, economic and environmental dividends.
