Wagon shortage hits onion supply
Commodity OnlineNASHIK: There is a double whammy for onion farmers this year. First the prices collapsed, then there are no railway wagons to
Transport the commodity to big cities.
Agitated over the situation, the traders urged the railway ministry to provide enough wagons for the transportation of onions.
They also threatened to boycott onion auctions if their demands were not met. An association representing onion traders has submitted a memorandum listing their demand to the Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) at Lasalgaon, Maharashtra.
Traders have purchased thousands of quintals of onions in auctions, but the stock was lying in open places due to shortage of wagons, the traders’ body said.
In another development, onion-growers were disappointed as prices of red onion declined due to heavy arrivals at APMC centres.
The wagon shortage issue has also been discussed with Union agriculture minister Sharad Pawar.
Pawar assured to look into the problem and make available adequate wagons.
