NEW YORK (Commodity Online): Scientific Certification Systems has approved World Bank's new greenhouse gas (GHG) accounting methodology under the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) to help small scale farmers access global carbon market whilst improving crop production over the long run.
The new methodology is based on the Western Kenya Smallholder Agriculture Carbon Finance project and focuses on helping farmers adopt practices that increase carbon in soil and biomass on agricultural lands. It will allow project developers to estimate the greenhouse gas emissions reductions of sustainable land management practices (SALM) in the agricultural landscape.
Some of the practices included in the methodology are manure management, use of cover crops, crop residual management and the introduction of trees to the landscape.
Scientific Certification Systems (SCS) has been providing global leadership in third-party environmental and sustainability certification, auditing, testing and standards development for more than 25 years.
