NEW DELHI (Commodity Online): World corn production may witness a significant growth this year drought like condition in major corn growing areas.
A recent data by the U.S. Grains Council shows that world corn production of 839 mn metric tons for the 2012-2013 marketing year will be the second highest on record, down 37 mn tons from 2011-2012 but up 8.2 mn tons from 2010-2011, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The 44.8 mn ton decline in U.S Corn production over the past three years is mostly offset by production growth in Ukraine, Argentina and Brazil. The global stocks to use ratio fell to 13.7 percent, its lowest level in nearly 15 years.
Recently, successful implementation of hybrid varieties in South East Asia helped to boost corn production in the region. In south east Asian nations corn is cultivated over 8.5 mn hectares.
In the South East Asian country Vietnam, over 1.2 mn hectares of corn is under cultivation as compared to 730,000 hectares in 2001. More than 90 per cent of the area is under hybrid corn with yields ranging around 4.3 tons a hectare.
As a result of rise in corn production South East Asia will become a major supplier of corn in near future say experts.
