Coconut oil is an edible oil obtained from the meat or milk of the coconuts scientifically known as ‘Cocos nucifera’. It is mainly used for cooking purposes and then for certain manufacturing processes.
Coconut oil is supposed to have originated from Asian tropical regions, where the coconut palm trees are abundant and it is reportedly in use for more than 4000 years.
There are different types of coconut oil such as virgin coconut oil, refined coconut oil, unrefined coconut oil, organic coconut oil, RBD coconut oil, etc. and among them, the main are two of them: refined and unrefined.
Refined or RBD(Refined, bleached and deodorized) coconut oil is made from copra- the dried coconut-through cold-pressing-the process used to extract oil or juice from a substance by pressing it without using any heat- and it would not have any coconut smell, while Unrefined or virgin coconut oil which would give off a fresh coconut aroma is made from fresh coconut meat by applying heat.
Both refined and unrefined coconut oils are used for cooking purposes and other manufacturing purposes such as making soap, detergent, varnish, paint, cosmetic products, etc. However, due to the high smoke point and mild flavour, refined coconut oil is better for cooking and baking purposes. And unrefined or virgin coconut oil is used to make cosmetic products and for skin and hair care.
Coconut oil is high in nutrients. It contains fat, vitamin E, sterols, manganese, iron, copper, etc. and it is considered healthy to be consumed. Normally, coconut oil can be stored for around one year without getting spoiled.
