The Indian government claims to have met approximately 85 per cent of its target for kharif rice procurement between October 1 and February 1. This faster procurement procedure may help to reach the previous year’s procurement level comparatively earlier.
As of February 1, all India rice procurement was 43.73 mt worth around Rs 1.36 lakh crore against the last year’s procurement which was 435.9 mt.
The target from the complete kharif season, October 1 –March 31 is 52.1 mt due to which approximately more than 87 lakh farmers are said to have benefited from the paddy procurement programme as the centre is reported to have bought the rice from the farmers at the minimum support price of Rs 2,060 per quintal.
The main states from where the procurement has been done are West Bengal, Assam, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
