Government’s paddy procurement increases by 9 per cent

Based on the food ministry data, the government’s paddy procurement has increased by around 9 per cent to 306.06 lakh tonnes in the 2022-23 kharif season.

Most of the supplies of paddy were purchased from Haryana, Punjab, Chattisgarh and Telangana. Usually, the procurement process begins in October soon after the monsoon, but in southern states like Tamil Nadu and Kerala, it starts from September.

The total procurement of paddy is reported to have increased up to 306.06 lakh tonnes to date from 280.51 lakh tonnes which was the total quantity procured in the previous year.

Paddy is grown during both kharif and rabi seasons in the country, but around 80 per cent of the supplies come from the kharif season. The government is reported to have aimed to procure 775.72 lakh tonnes of paddy in the kharif season 2022-23.
