The government of India has recently granted permission for duty-free exports of approximately six lakh tonnes of paddy to the neighbouring country Nepal, apparently as a move for helping the nation to meet its food security.
The Ministry of Finance issued a notification on October 31 which said that the duty-free exports can commence soon after the issuance of the notification that grants the permission.
The move is interpreted by a certain trade analyst to be India’s political effort to persuade Nepal from further strengthening its relations with China.
However, the notification is considered a relief to the exporters as the shipments of rice, specifically steamed rice was delayed after India had issued restrictions on the exports of rice from September 9.
