Pune: The prolonging of the monsoon is supposed to delay the beginning of the sugarcane crushing season in Maharashtra by around two weeks.
The state is facing a challenge to prevent spoilage and initiate the crushing season as the overall loss can be considerably large. The delay in the process can turn out to be an administrative challenge in the state.
The managing director of Maharashtra State Cooperative Sugar Factories Federation, Sanjay Khatal said,” We wanted to begin the crushing from October 1. The government allowed us to begin the process from October 15. But it is hard to begin now as the fields are wet and harvesting can not be done." However, the crushing is expected to begin from the first week of November.
