Orange is a fruit produced by certain trees from the citrus family ‘Rutaceae’. Its scientific name is ‘Citrus sinensis’ and is considered one of the most popular and consumed fruits in the world after tomato, apple and banana.

Orange can be cultivated on a wide variety of soils, but well-drained fertile loamy soils are the ideal soil for the orange plants that grow up to 16 to 50 feet in height and start bearing the fruits after 3 to 5 years from planting. Orange is a winter fruit that is normally harvested from November to June and planted from July to September.
The orange has more than 400 varieties and some of the main ones are navel orange, blood orange, tangerine, mandarin, seville, bergamot, clementine, trifoliata, etc. And among them, the most popular and used variety is navel orange due to its unique taste, flavour, rich vitamin C content and purported health benefits.
Oranges are rich in fiber and vitamin C, and also contain sugar, protein, sodium, calcium, potassium, carbohydrates and vitamin A. And the nutrients in the fruit are purported to protect cells from damage, help absorb iron for fighting anemia, boost the immune system, and improve heart health.
At present, Brazil is the largest producer, exporter and consumer of oranges in the world. Other major producers are China, India, Mexico, the US, Egypt, South Africa and Turkey. And Spain, South Africa, Egypt and the US are the other major exporters preceded by Brazil, while the largest importer is Germany, followed by France, Netherlands, China and Russia.
In India, the largest producer of orange is Madhya Pradesh, followed by Haryana, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Assam, Orissa, and West Bengal. And Nagpur in Maharashtra is called the ‘Orange City’ due to the large-scale production and trade of various varieties of orange, especially the Nagpur Mandarin orange, commonly known as Nagpur orange which is the most popular variety of the orange in India due to its unique sweet flavour and easily peelable rind.
