The unknown availability of cardamom in the auction centres despite increased rains spread panic among farmers.
According to farmers, the harvest of cardamom has gone down due to rains. However, they are wondering how the same comes to the auction centres without any scarcity which is suspected to be due to unauthorized cardamom supplies into the market.
The farmers and cardamom traders suspect something unusual to have happened as the supply of cardamom to the auction centres is not affected as against the earlier times when the markets used to run short of cardamom supplies due to rains.
The supplies are reported to have come from Guatemala in extremely large quantities which are suspected to have been imported to Bangladesh and then brought to Indian markets.
Guatemala does not comply to disclose their cardamom export details to Bangladesh which seems to be a move for supporting their buyers in Bangladesh and India. However, the local farmers and traders in Kerala and surrounding regions are affected by the outside supplies of cardamom and do not get the expected price for their produce.
