India is set for a bumper onion crop production in 2018-19, according to the Union Ministry of Agriculture’s third advance estimates.

The production of onion last fiscal is projected to be around 23.48 million tonnes (MT), 0.95 per cent higher than the previous fiscal, said the estimates released last week.

The rise in production has been projected despite a drop in area under cultivation. In 2017-18, 12,85,000 hectares in the country was under onion crop. This year, the number dropped by 22,000 hectares to 12,63,000.
