Government of India has set the procurement target for Wheat at 33 million tonnes (mt) in the rabi marketing season 2017-18. The target is almost 10% higher than the previous year procurement which was at 22.96 million tonnes.

The decision on procurement was take at a meeting of state food secretaries. Government aims to procure 11.5 million tonnes (mt) of Wheat from Punjab, 8.5 mt from Madhya Pradesh, 7.5 mt from Haryana, 3 mt from Uttar Pradesh, 1.75 mt from Rajasthan, 0.5 mt from Bihar, 0.15 mt from Uttarakhand, and 0.05 mt each from Gujarat and other States, as per food ministry.

The acreage of Wheat is 6% higher than the previous year at 315.55 lakh hectares (lh) as of week ended January 27, according to agriculture ministry data. Wheat production of the country in 2016-17 is estimated at a record high of 96.64 million tonnes by the agriculture ministry’ in second advanced crop estimates.
