The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) estimates India's 2019/20 wheat production at 100.0 million tonnes, up slightly from the previous year because of ideal growing conditions which boosted yields.

Area harvested is estimated at 29.8 million hectares, down slightly from 2018. Yield is estimated to reach record levels or 3.35 tonnes per hectare, up about 1 percent from last year.

“The Southwest Monsoon withdrew later than normal and the residual soil moisture from the late withdrawal encouraged timely planting in northwestern India. Scattered storms in January aided crop development and another storm in February boosted vegetative growth and grain development,” the USDA report said.

Temperatures were slightly below average, which was ideal for wheat. Satellite-derived Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) analysis depicted strong crop vigour during flowering across the major wheat production areas of Haryana, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh.
