Brinjal

Brinjal or Eggplant is botanically known as Solanum melongena, belonging to the family nightshade. Tomatoes, Potatoes and Bell Pepper too belong to the same plant family.

In ancient times eggplant was wildly grown in India, but it was first cultivated in China. Brinjal varieties around the world have various sizes, colour and shapes. The plant grows to about 40 to 150 cm tall.

Various Indian names for Eggplant are Vazhuthananga in Malayalam, Baingan in Hindi, Vankya in Telugu, Kathrikai in Tamil and Ringan in Gujarati. Basically, eggplant has pleasantly bitter taste and spongy texture.

Fertile soil with better pH level is good for the growth and yield of Brinjal. Sunny and well-drained locations are ideal. The various colours of Brinjal are Purple, White and Green.


Global eggplant production is about 50 million tons and area covered is around 1.6 million hectares.

Although Brinjal season is from August through October, it is available throughout the year. Eggplant is rich in Fiber, Copper, Vitamin B1, Vitamin B6, Vitamin B3, Potassium etc.

Major Brinjal producing states in India are Orissa, Bihar, Karnataka, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh.
