Coconut is scientifically known as Cocos nucifera, belonging to the family Arecaceae.

Coconut is believed to have originated in India and the Pacific region with two different varieties. The two varieties are water holding and fibrous variety respectively.

It is estimated that India produces about 20 million tons of Coconut annually. Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh contribute more than 90 percent of India's total Coconut production. In these regions, Coconut is mostly used in cuisines, as it is an important factor in their classic dishes. Coconut is produced around the year. The tall and the dwarf are the only two distinct varieties of Coconut in India.

Major Coconut Oil exporting countries are Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, United States, Sri Lanka, Papua New Guinea, European Union, Ivory Coast, Canada, India and Singapore.
