Coriander is an annual herb known as Cilantro or Chinese parsley. Botanically, it is named coriandrum sativum, belonging to 'Umbelliferae or Apiaceae' family. The coriander plant yields both fresh herb and spice seed, which are used primarily for culinary purposes. It is a common food flavoring agent. In India, coriander is also known as dhaniya.

Coriander is native to southern Europe and western Asia. Coriander has rich contents of carbohydrates, fat, protein, vitamins especially Vitamin C and minerals.

The spice helps clearing up skin disorders, reduces cholesterol levels and blood pressure. Coriander has medicinal properties to fight inflammatory diseases like arthritis. It can be used as an anti-septic and is used as a carminative and diuretic agent. It is an indispensable ingredient in bakery products, meat products, food flavoring, and liquor.

Sindhu, Sadhana, Swathi, CO-1, CO-2, CO-3, CS 287, RD 44 and DH 5, are the main coriander high yield varieties in India. June to July and October to November are the best seasons for coriander.

Loamy soil is best for coriander cultivation. It grows in black soil also. Cool and comparatively dry, frost free climate is the most suitable condition for coriander cultivation.

India is the largest producer, consumer and exporter of coriander. Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh are the major coriander producing Indian states.

The major global producers of coriander are India, Morocco, Canada, Romania, Russia and Ukraine, Iran, Turkey, Israel, Egypt, China, US, Argentina and Mexico.

India, Turkey, Egypt, Romania, Morocco, Iran and China are the major exporters. Middle East, South-East Asia, USA, UK, Germany, Malaysia, UAE, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, UK, Nepal, USA, Pakistan, Egypt, Singapore etc. are the major importers.
