Lemon scientifically called Citrus Limon, belongs to 'Rutaceae ' family. Lemon is a small evergreen fruit. The origin of lemon is unknown. Most people think that it grew up either in Burma or China.

The first large-scale lemon cultivation was started by Genoa, a port city in northwest Italy during 15th century. The appealing colour, flavour and odour has made lemon a leading citrus fruit in the world.

Lemon is packed with rich contents of vitamin C, vitamin B6, vitamin A, vitamin E, folic acid, niacin thiamin, riboflavin, pantothenic acid, copper, calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, zinc, phosphorus and protein.

Lemon has a range of health benefits thanks to its rich contents. It helps prevent diabetes, constipation, high blood pressure, fever, indigestion and many other problems. It also helps improve skin, hair, and teeth, reduces dandruff and gives hair a natural shine, relieves respiratory and breathing problems and reduces weight.

Lemon tree can thrive through infertile and very poor soil. There is no fixed period to plan lemon seeds. Usually lemon fruits are produced all round the year. A young tree produces the fruit after it achieves 3-4 years’ growth.

When the fruit ripens, its colour turns from green to yellow. Lemons tend to ripen only in trees; once it is plucked from tree before ripening, its flavour will not improve.

Sub-tropical climate is best suited for Lemon growth and development. It can grow in wide range of soils. Eureka, Lisbon, Villafranca, Lucknow Seedless, Assam Lemon, Nepali Round, Lemon 1 are the different varieties of lemon in India.

Andhra Pradesh is the largest lemon producing states in India followed by Maharashtra, Punjab, Madhya pradesh, Gujrat, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Orrisa, Assam and Bihar.

India is one of the top lemon producing countries. Mexico, Argentina, China, Brazil, USA, Turkey, Iran, Spain and Italy are other leading lemon producers.
