Rapeseed

Rapeseed, scientifically known as Brassica napus belongs to the family Brassicaceae. It is also known as canola in many countries.

In ancient times rapeseed was known as Rapum, and rapeseed is derived from this name. The two bye-products of Rapeseed are oil and oil cake.

Global production of rapeseed, currently around 40 million tons, is rising with the domestic demand.

 

Rapeseed is generally a winter crop grown in temperate climate around the world. In India rapeseed is sown during rabi season (October to November) and harvested during February to March.

In India, rapeseed accounts for about 65 percent of the total rabi crop produced.

The two main by-products of rapeseed are Rapeseed meal and Rapeseed Oil. Rapeseed Oil is extracted from the seed and the remaining part is called Rapeseed Meal.

As compared with other culinary oils, Rapeseed oil has lowest saturated fat. It has Vitamin E, high in monounsaturated fats, free from fat, no artificial reservations, and it is also safe to cook at high temperature.

Rapeseed meal is mainly used as cattle food.

Rapeseed producing states in India are Rajasthan, Gujarat, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Chattisgarh, West Bengal and Jammu and Kashmir.

Rapeseed producing countries are European Union, Canada, China, India, Australia, United States, Ukraine, Russia, Iran, Belarus and Bangladesh.

Rapeseed importing countries are China, European Union, Japan, Mexico, Pakistan, United Arab Emirates, United States, Turkey, Bangladesh, Canada and Israel.

Rapeseed exporting countries are Canada, Australia, Ukraine, European Union, United States, Russia, Kazakhstan, Argentina, Moldova, Paraguay and Chile.
