  • With a rise in domestic arrivals and supplies of imported Urad reaching the markets, the retail prices of Urad should ideally have cooled down. However, the gap between wholesale and retail prices continues to be high.

  • Urad prices have declined in the wholesale markets to trade currently at Rs 105-110 a kg but large retail shops including organized ones have continued to sell at elevated price with a slight marginal decline.

  • Festival season demand and a shipment delay has buoyed prices of Urad bucking a downward trend set in motion by fresh arrivals from a bumper kharif crop and firmed prices of Urad by about 15% in the last three weeks.

  • Indian government extended stock limit on Pulses for one year, which was ending on September 30, 2016 to keep prices under control.

  • Supported by good monsoon, India's Kharif food-grain production in 2016-17 crop year (July-June) is estimated to be a record 135.03 million tonne, up 9% from the previous crop year on record output of Pulses.

  • Higher output of Pulses will help soften retail prices, which have remained a major concern.

  • Production of Pulses, whose retail prices have risen sharply due to a fall in production in the last two years, is pegged at a record 8.7 MT in Kharif this year, up 57 per cent from 5.54 MT in the previous Kharif.

  • Urad production of India in Kharif this year is forecast to rise by 44.60% to 2.01 million tonnes from 1.39 million tonnes in the previous Kharif.

  • Total sowing in the ongoing Kharif season so far has surpassed both last year’s acreage and the normal area — the average of total sown area in the previous five years.

  • Urad sowing so far in India has been reported higher by 25.33% to 3.55 million hectares from 2.83 million hectares sown last year same time.

  • Nafed bought 472.15 quintals of Urad from the Indian states under Minimum Support buying programme as on September 22 from total 7,082 quintal arrived at the procurement centers.
